Welcome to Year 5!
Our class teacher is Miss Anderson.
In Year 5 we are independent learners, who ask questions and find out for ourselves to deepen our understanding.
In English we are learning to write in a variety of different genres, for example, diaries, playscripts, and myths and legends. The children will also be consolidating their understanding of punctuation, in particular, parenthesis and speech marks. In addition to this children will be learning about modal verbs, relative clauses, and specific sentence types.
Every day the children will have ‘reading for meaning ‘sessions; these are 20 minute sessions studying a text in detail. This term we will be reading Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo.
In Maths the children are learning a variety of new skills. These include place value of numbers up to a million, decimal numbers and fractions, units of measure, addition and subtraction, polygons, and negative numbers. The children will also be developing their problem solving skills.
By the end of Year 4 children should have learnt all of their multiplication tables up to 12 x12. We will be practicing these in class, but any extra practise at home would be appreciated.
In Science we are learning about Materials and their properties. This will involve carrying out lots of exciting science experiments.
Our topic this half term is all about Ancient Greece. The children will learn about the battles and what life was like in Ancient Greece.
This year the children are lucky to have PE lessons taken by a PE specialist, from Fit4schools. PE is on a Wednesday afternoon.
It is very important that a suitable PE Kit, that is clearly named, is available .
What work will be coming home?
Homework – Homework is given out every three weeks. The children have the choice of a selection of creative tasks to complete over a three week period. As the term progresses the children will also bring home a piece of English or Maths homework on a weekly basis, this is compulsory and will tie in with the following week's learning.
Reading – Please try to read at home with your child, and comment in your child’s reading record, at least three times a week. This only needs to take 10 to 20 minutes. While reading please help your child with any words they may struggle to read, discuss the text and ask them questions about the text
Spellings – Every Friday the children will be bringing home spellings from the Year 5 and 6 spelling list. These spellings will be tested the following Friday.
Please remember to label all items of clothing with your child’s name.
