Welcome to Year 5!
Our class teacher is Mrs Edward
In Year 5 we are independent learners, who ask questions and find out for ourselves to deepen our understanding.
In English we are learning to write in a variety of different genres, for example, poetry, diaries, playscripts, and myths and legends. We will also be consolidating our understanding of punctuation, in particular, parenthesis and speech marks. In addition to this we will be learning about modal verbs, relative clauses, and specific sentence types.
Every day we will have reciprocal reading sessions; these are 20 minute sessions studying a text in detail. This term we will be reading Michael Morpurgo's The Wreck of the Zanzibar.
In Maths we are becoming fluent learners a variety of new skills. These include place value of numbers up to a million, decimal numbers and fractions, units of measure, addition and subtraction, polygons, and negative numbers. It is within these aeas that we will develop our reasoning and problem solving skills.
By the end of Year 4 we should have learnt all of our multiplication tables up to 12 x12. We will continue to practise these in class, but any extra practise at home would be appreciated.
In Science we are learning about Earth and Space. We will be considering scientific arguments and use evidence and data to support our ideas and draw conclusions. We will focus on the behaviour of Earth and the Moon and how we experience day, night and the seasons.
Our topic this half term is all about Ancient Greece. The children will learn about the battles and what life was like in Ancient Greece.
This term we will be looking closely at cityscapes and learning to use the skills and techniques such as pop art, layering and use of palette knives and silhouette. We will also use a range of mediums such as watercolour, ink pen and oil paint.
This term we will have PE on an afternoon. This will include Dance indoors with Miss Hodgkiss and Invasion Games outdoors with Mrs Edward.
It is very important that we have a suitable PE Kit in school, with appropriate trainers for outdoor PE on the field. Please ensure it is clearly named.
What work will be coming home?
Homework – Homework is given out every three weeks. We have the choice of a selection of creative tasks to complete over a three week period.
Reading – We need to read at home every evening to an adult or to ourselves. We do however need a comment and signature in our reading record. We are expected to do this at least four times a week. This only needs to take 10 to 20 minutes. While reading please help me with any words I may struggle to read, discuss the text and ask me questions about the text.
Spellings – Spelling lessons will happen daily in school. Any spellings we still struggle to learn we will bring home in a log book. Please encourage and help me to learn these at home.
