Welcome to Year 5!
Our class teacher is Mrs Edward.
In Year 5 we are independent learners, who ask questions and find out for ourselves to deepen our understanding.
In English we are learning to write in a variety of different genres, for example, poetry, diaries, playscripts, and myths and legends. We will also be consolidating our understanding of punctuation, in particular, parenthesis and speech marks. In addition to this we will be learning about modal verbs, relative clauses, and specific sentence types.
Every day we will have reciprocal reading sessions; these are 20 minute sessions studying a text in detail and we will be analysing a range of text types that address the theme of recycling and the environment.
In Maths we are becoming fluent learners a variety of new skills. These include place value of numbers up to a million, decimal numbers and fractions, units of measure, addition and subtraction, polygons, and negative numbers. It is within these aeas that we will develop our reasoning and problem solving skills.
By the end of Year 4 we should have learnt all of our multiplication tables up to 12 x12. We will continue to practise these in class, but any extra practise at home would be benficial to them.
In Science we are learning about Life Cycles and Life Processes of animals and plants.
Our topic term is Looking after our World. We will be focussing on the natural resources, the importance of sustainability and the impact humans have on the planet.
Design & Technology
During our first half term we will be trialling different cooking techniques, having a go at creating our own recipes and learning how to scale up recipes to feed more people.
This term we will have PE on Friday afternoons. We will be improving our ball and game skills in netabll, hockey and tag rugby.
It is very important that we have a suitable PE Kit in school, with appropriate trainers for outdoor PE on the field. Please ensure it is clearly named.
What work will be coming home?
Homework – Homework is given out every three weeks. We have the choice of a selection of creative tasks to complete over a three week period.
Reading – We need to read at home every evening to an adult or to ourselves. We do however need a comment and signature in our reading record. We are expected to do this at least four times a week. This only needs to take 10 to 20 minutes. While reading please help me with any words I may struggle to read, discuss the text and ask me questions about the text.
Spellings – Spelling lessons will happen daily in school. Any spellings we still struggle to learn we will bring home in a log book. Please encourage and help me to learn these at home.

Year 5 Book Recommendations
We are book worms in year 5 and are always deeply absorbed in the stories, so much so we can't bare to put the book down at the end of a session.
Often, we recommend books to eachother, sharing them, saving them for one another. So we wanted to create a reading list of our own, here on the website that each of us can look at if we are stuck for what to read next. Here are some that have recently been recommended:
