Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

Hello and welcome to Year 6. Our class teacher is Miss Hodgkiss and our teaching assistant is Mrs Bolton.

This term, our spring theme is 'Survival'.

Reading

Year 6 will be reading Wolf Brother- a hunter-gathering quest story by Michelle Paver. They will explore the use a language and its impact on the reader; how Torak, a young boy, struggles to survive; and the implications that living in the wild can have.

On Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, will will look at other extracts and answer questions that follow one of the 4 types of questioning: retrieval, inference, justify and evaluative.

English

This term our survival theme will run through English. We will use Wolf Brother as a foundation to all of our writing tasks. We will write a set of instructions, a setting description and an extended narrative.

In English, will also spend time unpicking the punctuation and grammar rules we have learnt in KS2. We will look at when best to use in in different types of writing.

Maths

In Maths, we will be consolidating our 4 operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Also, we will be continuing working with fractions, decimals and percentages and the relationship between each.

In shape, we will recap the position and direction of a shape:

  • translation, reflection and rotation
  • coordinates in the 4 quadrants
  • properties of 2D and 3D shapes

Survival

To develop and understand how to survive, we will be developing many skills:

  • as a geographer- collecting data  to compare settlement, trade and land use
  • as a designer- creating prototypes, designs and building a bird box
  • as a scientist- classifying living things
  • as a linguist- communicating and writing in French
