Reception is the final foundation year for your child. It is here the children will become independent, curious learners. This will be achieved through explorative, meaningful play. We encourage the children to listen to one another, challenge themselves and think creatively.
Please read with your child at least 5 times per week. It is better to read little and often then children can adapt storytelling and come up with different exciting stories. Children start off with books with no words to encourage them to read the story with pictures and start to get the structure of a story. Adults should model exciting vocabulary that they could use to develop their sentences. We want children to love books and this needs to be a special and enjoyable activity that your child looks forward to. After your child is confident at blending the sounds together, they will move onto books with some words that are phonetically sounded. Please record your comments in your childs reading log.
For every new topic, the children are set home learning tasks that they can enjoy at home with the family. The children love their tasks and they can be anything such as making a 3D model of their house, design a piece of jewellery, practising their names in different things like glitter, sand etc. and going on walks to find autumnal things.
Homework will be shared on a Wednesday.
Phonic Key Words
This year the children will also be sent home- Read Write Inc. Phonic packs. These pack are to help you support your child with their new sounds and key words. They will be given out every Monday for the first term and will focus on the Set 1 sounds of Read Write Inc. They will include the sounds, some initial picture cards for matching and some simple CVC words for blending (reading.)
The children learn their tricky words (words that cannot be sounded out) through word walls and should learn these words by sight. Parents can play games at home such as lotto or bingo to enable the children to learn these. They can be placed on the fridge with magnetic letters or written with chalks outside.These word walls will be going home during the second half term after your child has learnt to read simple phonetical words.
What phonics looks like in Reception: Phonics plays an integral part in our reading and writing in Reception. We learn new sounds on a weekly basis and we provide lots of opportunities for children to practice through multisensory experiences to really embed the sounds. After learning some sounds, we start blending the words together with help from our friend FRED the Frog and to help us to read the words.
The children are also introduced to Red Tricky Words in Reception which are words the children use that cannot be sounded out. We have Cosy book areas both inside and outdoors that children share books with each other and teddies.
We will be learning to retell stories using the story map technique and also with the help of role play masks.
In Reception they are taught the fundamental maths tools linked to number and shape, space and measure. We link these to their ‘maths tool box’ which is linked into skills they will use throughout their education. These maths tools are;- measuring, ordering 1st 2nd 3rd, counting and comparing, groups of, making and exploring patterns, bigger or smaller, where is it, share so it's fair, more or less and how many more or less? Throughout, we use a tactile multi-sensory resource called Numicon that the children become familiar with and as a result they develop key mathematical skills. Where possible, maths is taught in a cross curricular approach and always through purposeful play opportunities, for example; making 3D shape animals, pretending to be a shop keeping buying some food for the tea party and becoming familiar with money and its quantities. We set challenges where children have to think and solve problems. We deepen their understanding by getting them to reason and explain their thinking to their peers and the teachers. We carefully plan for maths to incorporate cross curricular subjects and to represent real life so the children are engaged and inspired. We plan for maths opportunities in the indoor and outdoor environment but we also ensure we bring the learning to the child. We believe that children should not be called to an activity but we provide input maths opportunities that inspire children and then use resources the children are using to engage and foster a love of learning and developing skills in their maths tool box.
