Year Two

Hello and welcome to Year Two!

Our teachers are Mrs Galvin and Mrs Mansell.

Miss Gilks (student teacher) will also be teaching the class during the Summer term.

On this class page you will be able to find information about our timetable and what we are learning about this half term.

English

This term in English, we will be looking at recounts exploring the book ‘Diary of a Wombat’ by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley. This book gives us a peek into the weekly routine of a wombat. We will be looking at different points of view and using role play to re-enact the story. We will learn about the features and layout of diaries and have a go at writing our own animal diary. We will be focusing on writing in the first person as well as using the past tense.

Maths

This term we will be investigating addition and subtraction problems. We will be recapping number bonds that make 100 and exploring the relationship between these numbers. We will follow this with looking at Multiplication and division.

Science

In Science this half term we will be identifying and naming a variety of everyday materials. We will describe the simple properties and find out how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.

We will then go on to look at the four seasons and observe changes across these.

Homework

Optional homework sheets will be sent home twice a half term and will also be posted on this class page. Each sheet will contain a list of activities linked to English, Maths, Science and wider curriculum subjects we are learning about in class. Please send homework tasks in as and when they are completed.

Compulsory homework is the same for every child in the school. Please listen to your child read five times a week for ten minutes. Each child in Year Two has log in details for Numbots. This is a maths based game that allows the children to practise skills of counting, addition, subtraction and number bonds in a fun way. Log in details can be found at the front of their reading record. Please help them to log on for ten minutes five times a week. We go on the app in school so they know what to do when they are logged on. If your child is on the RWI Spelling programme (you will have had a letter about this), please support them in learning the spellings recorded in their log book. This log book needs to come in and out of school every day with their reading book and reading record.

Outdoor Learning

We will be going outside every week (no matter the weather!) during science or topic lessons. It would be helpful if children could have a pair of wellies or suitable outdoor shoes in school for the wetter weather.

PE

Our PE day is Tuesday. Please ensure your child has a full PE kit in school for them to be able to fully participate in the sessions. Full PE kit includes: a red t-shirt, black shorts or jogging bottoms and trainers or pumps. I will send PE kits home at the end of every half term to be washed.

As always, please do not hesitate to get in contact if you have any questions.

Topic- Painting with scissors (Henri Matisse)

Our Topic this half term is Painting with scissors- Henri Matisse.

We will be developing our independence to use scissors to cut straight and curved lines.

The children will spend the half term studying paintings from Henri Matisse and recreating these using different mediums. We will also use technology to research Matisse and write a fact file about him.

I am really proud of the children's effort to create 'Icarus'.

We read the story about Icarus and then used blue materials to create a skyline. We then looked at what it looked like to be falling through the sky and drew our own Icarus.

These are proudly displayed in the classroom currently.

We have also used everyday objects to print different shapes and will finish the half term creating a large Matisse peice of art- 'The Sheaf'.
